    Early Life and Education

    Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, into an immigrant family: Shyamala Gopalan, an Indian cancer researcher, and Donald Harris, a Jamaican economist. She grew up in an environment that was full of life and activism, deeply rooted in both her African American and Indian heritage; she attended both black Baptist churches and Hindu temples.
